Jefferson Airplane Takes Off (2003 Bonus Track Edition)

The Jefferson Airplane’s debut album features a powerful folk-rock group that’s very much a prototype for the wild, psychedelic group they became. Signe Anderson would later be replaced by Grace Slick, but her role here is limited here as Marty Balin handles most of the lead vocals and wrote most of the songs. Jorma Kaukonen’s superior guitar chops provide the necessary edge while Jack Casady’s bass is an essential ingredient, playing here with original drummer Skip Spence. “It’s No Secret,” “Come Up the Years,” and the versions of “Get Together” (later a hit for The Youngbloods) and “Tobacco Road” make for a definitive snapshot of this quickly changing era.
